Breaking down barriers: Treasure Coast school offers free tuition for 2026 seniors

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — A college program in the Treasure Coast is taking away the financial stress that comes with pursuing higher education.

For Treasure Coast and Okeechobee 2026 seniors, college could come at no cost through Indian River State College’s Promise Program, but it’s so much more than affordability; it’s also an investment in the community.

“When I heard about this program, I was excited. An opportunity to go to college for free and walk out with no debt,” said St. Lucie West Centennial High School senior Serenity Clarke.

Clarke dreams of helping others one day as a psychiatrist. With at least 12 years of schooling and training ahead of her, Clarke knows just how expensive higher education can get.

“I want to specialize in mental health, because I realize that the people around me have struggled so much,” said Clarke.

Clarke applied for Indian River State’s Promise program.

The program covers 100% of a student’s associate degree tuition, or what FAFSA does not cover. Open to graduating high school seniors in Okeechobee and Treasure Coast counties, it opens the door to a brighter future for more students.

The college has seen a positive response since the start of the program.

“When we started the Promise program in the fall of 2022, our matriculation rate went up to 42%. So we ended up capturing 42% of our local high school seniors coming to Indian River State College,” explained Beth Gaskin, the vice president of student success at IRSC.

The program is made possible by community donations, and Gaskin added that she hopes to see it continue for years to come.

“It’s not just that they make more money. They’re more active citizens. They’re more active voters. They’re better friends and neighbors. A more educated community is better for everyone,” said Gaskin.

Eligible students can apply now on IRSC’s website. College staff recommend applying by the beginning of the summer.
