AFC Book Study: Distracted: Why Students Can’t Focus and What You Can Do About It

Join AFC for a five-week book club exploring James M. Lang’s Distracted: Why Students Can’t Focus and What You Can Do About It. Rather than blaming phones and devices, Lang argues that how educators teach is often at odds with how students learn, and that the brain is naturally wired for distraction. Drawing on emerging research in the neuroscience of attention, the book offers practical strategies for structuring classrooms not as distraction-free zones, but as environments that actively cultivate students’ attention.
The book club will be led by Dr. Kayla Kuni, Associate Director of Libraries at Pasco-Hernando State College.

- 9/1: Preface, Introduction, and Chapter 1 (pgs. xi–xiv, 1–40)
- 9/8: Chapters 2 and 3 (pgs. 41–91)
- 9/15: Chapters 4 and 5 (pgs. 95–144)
- 9/22: Chapters 6 and 7 (pgs. 145–195)
- 9/29: Chapters 8 and 9, and Conclusion (pgs. 196–244)
