In response to Florida’s updated legislation on humanities education (1007.25, F.S. and 1007.55, F.S.), AFC invited humanities, religion, and philosophy instructors to join us for a webinar. Dr. James Manley from the College of Central Florida, drawing from the Herzl Institute’s workshop series on the political philosophy of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, shared practical strategies for incorporating these foundational texts into your general education courses.

What Participants Learned:

  • Strategies for engaging students directly with primary source readings from the Hebrew Bible
  • Methods for teaching the Hebrew Bible as a foundational text of Western civilization
  • Approaches to incorporating philosophical and historical perspectives in humanities instruction
  • Practical ways to meet Florida’s new humanities education requirements

About the speaker:

James Manley (PhD Florida, 1999) has worked as a janitor, grocery clerk, warehouse worker, library technician, mechanic’s assistant, farmer, shepherd, and rector of two Anglican parishes. Now he teaches history, philosophy, and religion at the College of Central Florida, directing the CF Honors Institute. He and his family live on ten acres of pine forest with two dogs, a donkey, five deer, a cat, and assorted poultry.
